Background: The Tall Ship Semester for Girls is a semester-long leadership program for high school girls operating on the campus of San Francisco State University. The first six weeks of the program take place in the classroom and include rigorous academic training in preparation for the voyage portion of the program. During the next six weeks, students and teachers ship aboard a traditional tall ship for a physically and mentally demanding voyage in the Caribbean. During the final six weeks, the students are back in the Bay Area, doing classroom work and completing internships in the maritime community. The program offers full credit to 15 high school girls and runs from January through June.

Internship Responsibilities: include instructing the Oceanography and Navigation/Math portion of the curriculum, as well as team teaching other areas, such as leadership and career training. The candidate should expect to teach in a classroom and to serve in a variety of roles, including mentor, coach and counselor. This position will accompany the student group on a six week voyage aboard a tall ship during which he/she will continue to teach aboard the ship and will play an integral role in monitoring the overall wellness of students. In addition, he/she will have chaperoning and logistical responsibilities.

This position’s responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Supporting teaching during land-based curriculum in a variety of subjects
    • Chaperoning field trips during land-based activities
    • Traveling with students to and from San Francisco to meet the vessel
    • Teaching at sea during the voyage
    • Grading student work and writing student reports
    • Curriculum and program development
    • Student/community outreach
Required Qualifications:
    • College degree with a major or concentration in Oceanography, Marine Science or Marine Biology
    • Experience leading student groups and instructing student groups in a variety of settings
    • Knowledge of traditional navigation and piloting techniques
    • Willingness to work hard, demonstrate leadership and good judgment and ability to be flexible in the workplace.
    • Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to facilitate group discussions, interact productively with community including parents, ship’s crew and volunteers
Desired Qualifications:
    • Experience teaching at the high school level
    • Experience conducting marine research at sea
    • Experience working with urban students, low income students and students of color
    • Sailing knowledge, especially working on large sail training vessels
    • Experience traveling in foreign countries
    • Certification as a life guard and experience instructing swimming lessons
    • Certification in First Aid/CPR or Emergency Wilderness First Aid
    • Spanish language proficiency
Length of Commitment:
    • January 5 to June 5, 2009
    • Voyage section of the program is planned for March 6 to April 18, 2009.
Stipend and Benefits
    • $1,000 month for five months
    • Travel to and from San Francisco if needed
    • Travel, room and board covered during the voyage section of the program
    • Possible shared housing arrangement during land-based portions of program
